"Spontaneous" Spellcasters no longer use the Vancian spell-slot system. Instead, they have a pool of Mana. Casting a spell expends an amount of mana equal to the spell's level. As such, spells modified by Metamagic feats require an amount of mana equal to their modified level. The benefit of being a spontaneous caster allows them to cast metamagic spells without being able to cast spells of the modified level, so long as they have the Mana to cover the cost.
